26 year old Myles Gorham is currently the guitarist for the Kansas City based swing band "The Grand Marquis". With them, he can be seen playing all over Kansas City as well as numerous other venues across the Midwest. While not playing with The Grand Marquis, Myles plays frequently with Matt Carrillo, The Micah Herman Quartet, The Loren Pickford Trio, The New Jazz Order Big Band, and at the Sunday night YJ's Jazz Jam that he has been a part of off and on since 2004. He also leads his own trio from time to time.
Myles grew up in the suburb of Shawnee Mission, about 30 minutes outside of the Kansas City area. Unlike many musicians, he didn't have a musical childhood or come from a musical family. There were no piano lessons at age two, or third grade flute recitals for Myles. He spent most of his time drawing and working on various art projects, or building objects out of Legos. However, as far back as he can recall, Myles has felt a strong connection to music of all kinds. He remembers watching Hee-Haw with his grandmother around the age of five and being captivated by country singers such as Dolly Parton, and listening intently to his brother's Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton recordings a few years later. He even recalls trying to make guitars out of cereal boxes and rubber bands on more than one occasion as a child. But, despite this strong interest, he didn't actually begin playing guitar until, at the age of 12, he picked up his brother's extra (and barely useable!) guitar and a xeroxed page showing about 15 different chords. Myles disappeared back to his bedroom with these items in hand, and when he emerged a few ours later, he had learned all the chords on the page, and knew what he would spend the rest of his life doing.
Now, roughly 14 years later, Myles has played gigs all over the midwest (including just about every room in the Kansas City area) as well as in New York City where he attended the prestigious New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and lived for three years. Myles has studied privately with such notable guitar players as Peter Bernstein, Steve Cardenas, and Jonathan Kreisberg and has played at top New York City jazz clubs such as Sweet Rhythm and The Garage. In spring of 2008, he chose to move back to Kansas City where he soon went to work playing in the live music shows at Worlds of Fun (35 Years of Dancin' to the Music). Just as soon as the Worlds of Fun season ended, Myles took over the guitar chair for The Grand Marquis who are currently keeping him busy with 150+ shows a year.
